June 8/00 - American feminist Gloria Steinem has apololgized to Canadians for her fellow countrywoman Dr. Laura Schlesinger.
At a Toronto forum Wednesday promoting Ms. Magazine, which has been publishing bi-monthly since its purchase in late 1998 by a consortium of feminists, Steinem answered a question from Straight Goods.
When asked about the controversy that ensued this week when noted sex educator Sue Johanson blasted Dr. Laura on the Straight Goods site, Steinem said "As an American, I apologize for Laura Schlesinger."

"We need to write five letters a week, give 10% of our salaries, if we can afford to, for social justice, and attend at least one demonstration a month." |
Steinem urged the audience to act to ensure that there are alternative voices and agendas:
"We need to write at least five letters a week praising or criticizing what we see and read. It's not difficult to do."
"We need to give at least ten per cent of our salaries, if we can afford to, for social justice."
"We need to attend at least one demonstration a month."
