It pays to check out the Editor's Pick of the week, rave our readers.
This week's pick (ucbswww.bank-banque-canada.ca/scripts/search_ english.shtml), a Bank of Canada website that lets you search for money hidden away in dormant bank accounts, has led to the recovery of hundreds of dollars in 'forgotten' cash.
"Thank you for the link to the Bank of Canada," writes Jeffrey Mayer. "As a result, we located an abandoned bank account containing $722."
Vern Edwards of Ajax found $652 belonging to his mother-in-law. "I had no idea any relatives had missing money," he says. "I just checked my last name, my mother's maiden name, then my wife's maiden name. That's how I found money for my mother-in-law."
Edwards, an occupational health and safety director for the Ontario Federation of Labour, checks in on the Straight Goods several times a week. He says that he's not the only one who has money coming to him.
"I have also found a considerable sum of Ontario government money left unclaimed," he adds. "Most of this seems to be forgotten petty cash accounts or certified cheques not cashed, etc. Nothing scandalous but probably several thousand tax payer dollars just the same."
Maybe someone should tell the Ontario government that they should be reading Straight Goods.
Straight Goods' columnist Pat Daley telephoned Editor Susan Sperling on Tuesday to report that her spouse had found around $90 on the site. "I'm thrilled that Straight Goods has helped people find money," Sperling said. "I just wish that I'd found some of my own."
Check out the Bank of Canada unclaimed balances site. And keep surfing to Straight Goods - you never know what you'll find.
