Commentary:
It rarely happens any more. Like the wife of far too many years with her plaintive "You don't tell me you love me any more," It is a rare occasion when someone, anyone invites me to be interviewed on TV.
But it happened.
Unfortunately it was aired weeks after taping and weeks before September 11th, so viewers must have wondered why I spoke of the economic downturn without a mention of what the impact of the bombing would be.
Jim Cantelon on CTN asked me about the future of the Left. I said that the Left could make a comeback if the economy took a downturn and there was real hardship. What a sad and tragic reality!

Do we need hard times to awaken people to what has stared them in the face for years: many of us are one or two paycheques away from homelessness. That includes of course, those brave souls who put their faith in the stock market as a reservoir for their savings, only to see those savings disappear.
The questions: Did Mike Harris quit because he knew damn well his Tories could not survive in an atmosphere of economic gloom? Or did he, with his simplistic sense of reality, see only that he couldn't win and he'd better abandon ship?
Will Ontario follow British Columbia's madness in electing a right-wing "liberal" premier? Do we want more of the same? Do we want Jim Flaherty who is about as dedicated to neo-con ideology as they come? Do we get a Chris Hodgson who was absent the day they distributed brains? Or Tony Clement who would rather be head of the Alliance Party? Or Janet Ecker, who, in spite of her "Red Tory" credentials, will continue the revolution of Common Nonsense?
Or will Ontario turf the Tories and replace them with "Blue Lite" Dalton McGuinty?
Who should be the next Ontario Premier? Is Mike Harris as dumb as everyone would like to believe? Is George W. Bush in charge of anything as he thrashes madly about trying to look decisive? Do we need a recession to rekindle support for The Left? Do you have money invested in the market? I do. But I'm a realist, not a revolutionary? Did the poverty protestors achieve anything by trying to "shut down" Bay Street? Do you still have a job? Would you like to see me back on TV? (kidding)
P.S.: Gloating over globalization. The search for cheaper labour is a continuous rush to the bottom. Just as one country gloats over its new-found commerce hecause their wage standards are "competitive." the "advantage" lasts only until some other country gets costs even lower. Minolta announced that they are moving their camera-making from Malaysia to China. Reason: lower labour costs. You can run but you can't hide. Globalization sucks!
