In response to Larry's query, National Post columnist and novelist Roy MacGregor expressed healthy skepticism about what the Olympics have become:
I could, quite frankly, give a rat's ass if some juiced-up freak wins a medal, especially when they will only be interviewed by their footware spokesperson while the media takes note, refuse to stay in the Athletes' Village and - as far as I've ever been able to determine - cheat and lie and do everything possible against the Olympic idea. Sure there are good, and clean, athletes, and I wish them well. But it ain't a matter of life and death.
Randy Starkman is a wonderful person, and works harder than anyone one Olympics coverage. He told me in Sydney that "This is Net Worth. These are the Gordie Howes of sport and they're being ripped off by the COA and IOC." I'm not so sure. People would walk across the street and pay to see Howe. Most Olympic sports are so unbearably boring that I would argue the people tune in to the spectacle only, therefore it's the Olympics, not the athletes, that are the real stars.
