Welcome to the new Straight Goods
Independent news alive and well in a sea of mega media mergers
By: Ish Theilheimer, Publisher, Straight Goods
Straight Goods is back. Since we left you in June, it hasn't been an easy for "dot coms" and Internet publishers. Many have fallen by the wayside. Doubters are everywhere.
Here at Straight Goods, we still believe. And with every corporate media merger we believe more strongly that Canada and the world need independent journalistic voices to counter the monotonous drone of Big Media with all its inherent biases.
We've made important changes, some because readers requested them, others, frankly, to save money. We expect to survive, grow and become a part of the Canadian media scene. We hope you'll help us out.
We've added features to make the new Straight Goods smarter, more interactive, and more "Webby". The new Straight Goods Forum with media veteran Larry Solway is the flashiest new item. Every week, Larry will be mixing it up with newsmakers, celebrities, experts, commentators and anyone with an opinion who cares to share it with us. In addition, we've added new frequently-updated interactive features: Consumer Forum, Notes and Letters, Activist Notebook, and News from the Web
One big change is that most of our writers are currently working "on spec." They don't get paid unless other publications buy rights for their articles from Straight Goods. We hope that many Web and print publications will see the advantages of republishing the excellent writing we feature. It's a good way for you and your organization to support independent journalism and journalists.
So welcome back to Straight Goods. It's our job to help you save money, protect your rights and untangle spin. If you have information to share with us, please do so. If there's information you want, please ask. And if there are features you'd like to see, please let us know.
Thanks for your support. We hope you'll visit often.
