WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY
UNESCO has declared that the theme of World Press Freedom Day 2006 (May 3) is Media, Development and Poverty Eradication. "Media freedom and access to information play a key role in facilitating local participation and empowerment of the poor," says UNESCO. This year, the first Guillermo Cano Press Freedom Award (of US$ 25,000) will go to Lebanese TV presenter, May Chidiac, for her "direct and open approach in a country traumatized by years of war."
